What you get on a CDrom.

Except for the CD containing photographs, the data on these CD ROMs consists of pictures (graphics files) of every page, generated by scanning the original book. The scans of the text pages are not photographic images, but are black and white 1 bit images (i.e. you see either black or white, with no greys) which means that when printed you obtain a page which is very close to the original. There are no plain text files of the books on these CD ROMs. All files are pdf files (Adobe Acrobat) but see the note on the Whitaker's Craven CD about .png files. Readers are provided on the CDrom for both PCs and Macs.

Navigation of the CD rom within Acrobat is made easy and quick by means of "navigation panes". Some of the CDs contain "Active links" (similar to HyperLinks on a web page) on the Contents and Index pages, and some are machine searchable. Please note that those CDs that are machine searchable will generally not have active links on the index pages.

I take pride in my work, and in producing the data for these CD roms I have done my best to ensure that the image files are of high quality and that the CD rom is a high quality branded disc (usually TDK or Memorex). I believe that the resulting products are second to none in their field.

Copyright and conditions of use.

Copyright law:
- Under UK copyright law (and in most other countries too), you would not be allowed to copy more than a very small part of a CD even for your own use (this applies to CDs from any UK source, and not just mine!!). As you may be wanting to print a single book or use the information in your family history notes etc., when you buy a CD from me, you are granted a licence to allow you to copy for your own personal use as stated below.
Why legal copyright exists on these CDs:
- Whilst the books scanned are out of copyright, the image files on these CDroms are my copyright, in much the same way as photographs would be.
Agreement when you purchase:
- By purchasing any of these CDroms, you are agreeing to the conditions placed on the use of the files on these CDroms and are granted a licence to use the files for your own personal use. If you want to use the CDroms for anything else, please contact me first.
Conditions of use:
- You may use the files on these CDroms for your own personal use for such things as printing a single book for your own use. You may not copy the files on these CDroms to other CDroms or other media for onward transmission of the data (or in order to be able to sell the original), nor attempt to make monetary gain by the use of these files. You are allowed to copy the CD in order to produce one backup of the data, but you must be in possession of both the original and the copy. You may not use the files in such a way as to deprive or attempt to deprive me of income from future sales of these CDroms - this includes such things as advertising "look-ups" on mailing lists and other parts of the Internet (but this does not include the Baines, Bulmers and Langdales books). IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING:

All text files are scanned at 300 dots per inch (dpi), and if printed at the same size as the page scanned, then you will get a good quality reproduction of the original page, but please remember that the original page may have been anything but perfect (Baines' and Langdale's). To the best of my knowledge, every page on these CD roms are fully readable, though in some cases there may be only partial characters. The scanned page files are 1 bit images and not photographic images. (i.e. the viewed page is either black or white, no greys). This ensures that you obtain a well defined image when printing.

Typical problems with the original books are:

Brown spotting (I have usually removed these with a graphics editor)
Too much ink, causing blurring and "tails".
Too little ink, causing partially missing characters
Leaning type, causing only the left or the right hand side of a character to appear.
"Print through" from the back of the page causing double images to appear when the page is scanned.
"Ink spread" caused by the ink seeping across the paper over the years. This causes the original page to go a yellowy brown.
In general, all the data in the files is to within about 0.3 degrees of true. However in some cases the original is out of true, particularly the last pages of the Baines East and North Riding. I scanned some of the pages 10 times before realising that the vertical lines weren't at right angles to the horizontal lines on the orginal.
